Storm Heroes: Cecil Plains SES

The Cecil Plains SES Group was presented with the NRMA Insurance Storm Heroes Award at a special lunchtime event in the Cecil Plains Memorial Hall on Saturday, 1 October.  This award recognises the Group’s efforts during the floods that isolated Cecil Plains in December and January.

The hours the group contributed to the rescue and relief efforts number well into the thousands, but it is the swift water rescues of stranded people that defined the commitment and skill of the group.  They used their flood boat in fast flowing waters to rescue a stranded family with a six month old baby and two men stranded on a car roof.  Once the floodwaters receded in Cecil Plains, the group travelled farther afield to Grantham to help search for missing people and north Queensland in the wake of Cyclone Yasi.
Cecil Plains SES Deputy Controller James Ross congratulated his members for their extraordinary efforts during last summer and noted that the group’s members were excited to receive the Storm Heroes Award above other equally worthy nominations from across Queensland.
The NRMA Insurance Storm Heroes Team Award includes $2,000 in cash for the Cecil Plains SES Group to spend as they choose.
