Queensland goes orange for National SES Week

Some of Queensland’s most iconic landmarks will show their support for State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers when they ‘light up’ orange for National SES Week (12 to 18 November 2012).

Orange lights will beam from the Q1 Skypoint Observation Deck on the Gold Coast and Jupiters Casino in Townsville while the Brisbane River will reflect the illuminations of the Treasury Casino, the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges and the Wheel of Brisbane.

The Wheel of Brisbane opened just 10 days after the 2011 floods inundated the structure thanks to the hard work of dedicated SES volunteers. The Wheel will light up orange to say thanks to the volunteers who got it back up-and-running during this time.

Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) Assistant Director-General Bruce Grady said the Queensland SES were incredibly grateful for the support received this National SES Week.

“The week provides a great opportunity for all Queenslanders to acknowledge the tremendous work of our SES volunteers and it’s great to see so many of Queensland’s iconic buildings show their support,” Mr Grady said.

“The distinctive orange SES uniform is worn by volunteers who donate thousands of hours each year to their communities and has come to symbolise the strength of community spirit in Queensland.

“It’s fitting for Queensland’s most iconic buildings to be illuminated in orange, especially those buildings impacted by severe weather in the past, to say thank you and acknowledge the great work our SES volunteers do.”

NRMA Insurance Community & Sustainability Manager, Megan Lupton, said SES volunteers are invaluable in helping QLD recover from severe weather.

“We have seen up close the devastation severe weather can bring. We are proud to work with the QLD SES and wish to say a huge thank you to the volunteers for their role in our communities,” Ms Lupton said.
